My girlfriend just got a new car. I want to get her a satellite radio. Should I get her Sirius or XM? She loves baseball, but also loves Howard Stern. Is there a radio out there that gets both? Please help!

  1. We have XM and i really like it ...

  2. sirius maybe

  3. Sirius much better channel list.

  4. Rocky & Penguin are on it.

XM and Sirius do not have unlimited bandwidth (space) for channels. So they can't just put all of both ...on each. The much-touted packages that will allow "Best of Both" type pricing are in the near future.

Thus, part of their deal with the FCC for approval of the merger is that they get a dual-band receiver on the market pretty snappy.

There are a few esoteric brands and hybrids already available, but for now, I'd check for the free internet trial on both of their websites (simultaneously - switch back and forth) to see which you prefer, then buy the cheapest receiver you can find to use until the "next generation" receiver is released by the newly merged company.

You might even buy a re-furb, Craigslist item or eBay auction until after they are released en masse and you've decided on which dual-band receiver you want. Figure 6 months to a year for general distribution by a major manufacturer.

  5. Sirius, since THEY bought xm.

  6. well sirius and xm just recently announced a merger of their services but have yet to announce much about it. Some station from xm will transfer over to sirius and vice versa but no one knows yet if they will release a unit that gets both services. They may have released more news about it but as far as i know they havent. I think though that howard stern will be availabe on both soon though. I hope that info helps.

  7. I heard they just made a deal to merge them together. So you'll be able to have both in one lol.

  8. As Duh said, you're best bet is to wait the 6-9 months expected time to introduce the dual satellite service receivers. As you have to double up currently to get both services

But if you are desperate, find out which she rather, baseball or Stern for right now.. but best bet is to wait.

Basically why we can't use a xm radio on Sirius and vise versa from what I understand has to deal with how the satellite broadcasts the signals and the encryption used.... Think of Sirius as analog TV and Xm as digital TV... basically Sirius broadcasts a full channel of information compared to XM who broadcasts much things including On-Star info as well as radio programming

  9. NO!!!  DON'T DO IT!

I could be very wrong, but I was told that since Sirius & XM have merged, they will be putting out a different signal or something like that, and that you would need a new receiver that isn't quite out yet.

    I'm sorry...I can't explain what I heard because I don't understand it all.

But I guess I'm saying check it out good before you buy because it could change.

  10. get xm
