  1. I am mad on trains!!

Shildon is good for a nearby one!

Personally York is best as I have been there 100+ times!

  2. Gotta be York, it is the National Rail musuem and is a great day out.

  3. My 5 year old grandson enjoyed the National Railway Museum at York. This week there is a special event on celebrating 40 years since the end of steam on BR, it costs £11 to get into this event, but the museum itself is free. The event will probably consist of lots of steam engines in steam out in the South Yard, if it is anything like Steamfest in 04.

  4. York certainly, or what about the North Yorks Moors Railway for a day out with working trains

  5. North Yorkshire Moors Railway  Pickering yorks   put that in your search engine think you will like it also includes rides behind steam if you want

  6. York is your best bet. Largest rail museum in the world, and it's free.

  7. Our boys loved the York one at that age and it's free. We took them on the train and that enhanced the day out (it's reasonable if you have a family rail card)

  8. Both The National rail museum York and the the Shildon section  are free.

I think the York museum is the best of the two.

But take a fair amount of spending money..theres a lot of nice things to buy(I must have spent a small fortune on my kids there).

Food on site can be quite expensive..packed lunch or a walk into the city walls to buy food.

If you arrive by train..use the direct footbridge from the station..it'll avoid a walk along busy narrow footpaths next to a very busy road...avoiding heartstopping moments when you have an excited young lad pulling you along!  LOL

  9. york is the best one i have visited

  10. I can only suggest Basseandean.

You'll find it on the Midland line

  11. I suggest York this week, as it is having a special exhibition to mark the end of steam on BR 40 years ago. There are loads of working steam locos, rides to be had etc. Get there before it closes - your son will love it!
