Which reflectors on a bicycle are of any use?

I imagine that the only ones that are particularly effective are the rear reflectors and pedal reflectors. I can't see the point in front reflectors or those fitted to the wheel spokes.

Which ones do you notice while driving?

  1. All reflectors are small.  At night wear a reflective jacket.  Then at night you will be seen.

  2. I take all reflectors off my bikes except the rear one as I've got two good eyes to see what's in front of me.  If I ride in the dark I always have a good back and front light as required by law.  If you feel safer with wheel, front and pedal reflectors then keep them on.

  3. I think that sometimes but , from the front the reflector is visible to oncoming traffic and if your lights fail then a good failsafe , the wheel reflectors are good from the side .

  4. reflectors are ugly put if it your life at state keep them on, erm may be i should take my own advice.

  5. they're all there forf a reason. traffic comes at us from all directions, not just behind! I know we all remove reflectors for the coolness factor, but the facts are, most states, locallities, require lights and reflectors to meet minimum visibility requirements. check your local statutes. I have my commuter bike decked out, but not my mtb or road bike..

  6. none of them. reflectors do NOTHING during the daylight, and they're not enough at night time. in many states, if you are riding at night with JUST reflectors, you'll get a ticket. you need lights to lawfully ride at night. put a headlight and taillight on your bike, and wear bright clothing.

  7. When you ride across a street and a car is coming, the reflectors on the spokes are a godsend, especially because they move with the wheels and create a "flashing" effect.

In some countries they are compulsory and for the few pence they cost I think they should be compulsory everywhere.

  8. Ive always found the pedal reflectors and wheel reflectors the most noticeable.  These both produce a strobing effect and you really have to be trying to miss them.  The rear reflector is the only other one I have ever recalled ever seeing while driving.  I never recall ever noticing a front reflector.  I imagine this is because a bike riding towards me is not within the beams of my headlights.  I drive 100,000 miles plus a year for my work and these have been my observations from the seat of a semi truck.
