Question:

Which reliable, automatic car should I go for?

Hi,

I have been driving for just under a year and I am looking to change my car.

I currently have a 1995 N reg Ford Fiesta. (Manual)

However I only bought that car just to learn to drive in so I didn't wreck something that cost more.

I am now planning on buying an automatic as I find them much easier to drive.

My question is:

I have around £3000 (could push to £3500) for a reliable, post 2000 automatic car, what should I look to buy?

I was thinking of a Nissan Micra, 52 reg. (The newer shaped one). But I don't know if it is worth it, it costs £3399?

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

  1. I don't have a recommendation.  BUT...

I just want to say I want to congratulate you on getting an older car while learning.  FINALLY somebody here with some good sense.

    Good Luck...

  2. whats the mileage on the micra - it sounds quite good.

renault clio autos are good apparently ( not as reliable though)

  3. The price is very steep, about what a main dealer would charge with a warranty, finance deals, trade-in etc. If the car's for sale privately, I'd offer no more than £2750 top whack, and only then if there's a good service history and no obvious faults with the car.

55k city miles isn't as good as it might sound either. If the car's been used for shorter journeys, it'll never have had a good blast to clear out the cobwebs, and the engine may actually be pretty well worn. I'd happily have a car with higher mileage made up of longer motorway runs.

A Micra is a good enough car, but I wouldn't be keen on this one.

  4. Those are low miles for a car, so its going to be more dependable. I would get it until you could afford a really nice new car.

  5. "city miles" is not a plus point, city miles wear out a car more than motorway miles.

just thought I'd point that out.

Not that it matters, its probably a fine car.

I know you seem to want a small car, if you were asking for a family car i would SAAB evry time, thier autos are great.

With smaller autos, please make sure you test drive it properly, accelerate as if you are overtaking, they are often lacking in power..that might not bother you but best find out.

  6. peugoet i think are the best
