Also is it safe to drive. How is the border crossing. I will be returning the car form where I picked it up.

  1. This is not a good idea--for the most part Costa Ricans leave their cars in a parking lot at the border when they go to Panama because of the complicated paperwork.   Where are you travelling to in Panama?  If you are going to Bocas for instance, a car is just an expensive hassle.

  2. If you rent a car from any rental agency, you must ask them if it is permitted to drive the car up to Costa Rica.

    Here are just a few names of agencies:

    Avis - - - - - > > > > > www.avis.com

    Dollar - - - - > > > > > www.dollar.com

    Hertz - - - - -> > > > > www.hertz.com

    Thrifty - - - - > > > > > www.thrifty.com

  3. Not sure if you can, but you could buy a car, drive it across, and sell it later if not damaged excessively.

  4. For your own safety and the safety of other passangers, with you, may I highly recommend that you do take a flight towards Costa Rica and leave the headaches behind.

    Welcome to Panama.

  5. Hi W Q.

    I just called Budget and Thrifty, same answer from both of them: NO, you can not rent a car here and drive it down to Costa Rica (or viceversa). Budget told me there is an agreement among rent-a-car companies between both countries about this.

    The safety issue I guess do not matter now but I did travel some years ago in my own car and I had NO problems. In the border did not let you go trough after certain hours (duty hours) in those days.

    Hope it Helps!!
