  1. All 3 are nice -- I'll let others give there opinion on those brands.....  My suggestion is to avoid the .270 WSM. Get the regular .270... It seems like every year a manufacturer comes out with a new "short magnum" or some other "special" ammuntion... I personaly like things nice and simple. Ammunition thats available on every sport shop in North America is what I suggest everybody stick with so the .270 it is.....

The .270 family of cartridges at Chuckhawks.......

If I might make an alternate rifle suggestion -- Consider the Kimber rifles...

    Kimber Classic in .270 Winchester...

    The Kimber Classic Select...

    Kimber Montana........

These rifles maybe a little more than your budgeting but trust me you wont be disappointed... These are fine American made rifles....

  2. All are great choices, I think the Tikka has a better price tag however

  3. Those are all good, but I believe you will be better off with a .308.  A .308 will do anything those other rifles will do and ammo costs a lot less and a .308 will probably be a lot more accurate than the calibers you mentioned. Most police snipers use .308s. They do so because of accuracy and power even though they could use more expensive rifles to shoot. Research it for yourself before spending your money, and at least look at Ruger model 77s and Remington 700s..

  4. Got 2   308's myself... I'm a Browning person myself but I also own a few Remington Rifles....one being a 270.

I like the 308 because I too believe they are more accurate - but I own a nice browning stainless steel stalker with a boss unit on it... nice gun....

  5. Winchester model 70 .270 wsm

  6. Browning Medallion 270

  7. Look at the strengths of each rifle and decide which ones are important to you.

Tikka: probably the smoothest bolt action on the market, except maybe the Sako. Action is like glass. Scope mounting is a snap with the grooved receiver and included rings.  It has an excellent adjustable trigger.

A-Bolt: short, 60 degree bolt throw makes for fast cycling. Probably the shortest lock time of the three. The barrel is free floated and the recoil lug is bedded at the factory.  Has a three lugged bolt head guided by a non-rotating bolt body for massive in-battery strength.  Comes with a box magazine held in by a hinged floor plate.

Model 70: The Rifleman's Rifle, has a non-rotating claw extractor for foolproof extraction and controlled feed. Also, has a 3-position safety that locks the firing pin rather than the sear.

As for chambering, I am not a big fan of the WSMs, but that is pure personal preference.  As a reloader, I find the standard cartridges much more flexible and easier to achieve the results I want.  You have to go a long ways to find a cartridge that can compete with the 270 Win.

With either of the three, you will be plenty happy.

Edit:  There is a lot of talk about one cartridge being more accurate than another.  Most of it is pure conjecture.  Accuracy is a combination of many factors.  A rifle 270 WSM or 270 Win can be just as, less, or more, accurate than one in 308 Win.

The reason that police use 308 Win (and 223 Rem) is twofold: first, these cartridges have been studied to death because they are in current use by many militaries; and second, they allow police agencies to take advantage of military logistics if necessary.  It has nothing to do with accuracy, per se.  If accuracy was the criteria, police would be using something like 6mmBR.

The 270 in WSM or standard is an accurate, hard hitting round for short and long range, and don't let anyone tell you different.

  8. All three rifles are excellent.  All I can tell you is to handle each one and see which one feels "right" to you.

  9. I am real partial to the model 70 winchester since I have a featherweight model in .270 win.  No one mentions one of the pluses is the flat action on the Model 70 that beds more solid than round ones.  Hende more accuracy potential.  If you buy new, make sure you get the model with the old style claw extractor.  It aslo has more strength on problem cases, and it should feed better.

As far as caliber, I think the new .270

WSM is great, but if you are out hunting and something happens could you get shells at a local hardware??? Probably not, but everyone that sells ammo has .270 win

What ever you choose, have fun.

  10. Either the Browning or Winchester, but in the 30-06 caliber.* It is more versatile, and you have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from.* It will harvest any game in North America cleanly and efficiently.*~
