  1. Hampi (Kannada: ಹಂಪೆ, Hampe in Kannada) is a village in northern Karnataka. The name is changed from Pampa, which is the puranic name of the Tungabhadra River on whose banks the city is built. Hampi is located within the ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara empire.

    The Tungabhadra River is a sacred river in southern India that flows through the states of Karnataka and part of Andhra Pradesh to merge with the larger Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh. It is the chief tributary of the Krishna River. In the epic Ramayana the Tungabhadra river was known by the name of Pampa
