I love hampsters, they are adorable but I can't stand how thier urine is extrememly hard to clean off the cage and stinks all the time. I had two hampsters and they peed in the corners of thier cage and it always ate away at the plastic and was hard to clean off. When I used palstic covers under thier bedding they would jsut chew them up and still pee in the corners once the plastic was gone.

I want something, are ginea pigs, gerbles, or chinchillas any better at this? Does thier pee stink as bad, is it easier to clean thier cages?

  1. gerbils are the least smelly and ferrets are the worst

  2. Chinchillas aren't stinky at all, they aren't high-maintainance, and they're fluffy and fun! They have a dust bath that they clean themselves in. You can look in the newspaper or at a pet store, I usually tell people to adopt from shelters when it comes to pets, I don't think chinchillas are in shelters tho.

    Cons

    - Chinchillas are nocturnal

    - Chinchillas make ALOT of noise at night

    - They need to play when they're awake, so you'll have to let them out at night [In a ball] for about an hour or so

    - Chinchillas are very social so its best to have more than one [Its alot of work to get them to get used to eachother]

    - Chinchillas need something to chew on constantly

    - Chinchillas love to hide [Hard to find if lost]

    - Chinchillas are very quick and their ribs are fragile

    - Chinchillas will bite

    - Chinchillas don't like to be held

    Pros

    - Chinchillas usually don't smell [Unless you don't clean the cage]

    - You don't have to bathe them [Just give them a thing of chinchilla sand, not dust]

    - Simply ADORABLE

    -Fluffy, furry, fun

    -can roll around in balls

    -playful

  3. I've heard that guinea pigs and girbils are pretty clean.

By the way, DID SOMEONE SAY FERRETS ARE RODENTS??????!!!!!!!

THEY ARE NOT!! They're mustelids, like badgers, ermines, mink, stoats, and weasels.

    Bunnies aren't rodents, either!

  4. I used to have a pet rat and I have worked at a pet store. They seem to hav the least amount of stink to them. And you can teach them tricks.

  5. I have a chinchilla...and it is not a tw@t like JJ says....

anyways with enough handling a chinchilla will become tame and are lots of fun...

I have had hamsters, rats, mice and gerbils...all of them smell but the chinchilla does not have much of a sent...most of the time the only smell I notice comes from their bedding.

However, a chinchilla is expensive and it is highly reccomended that you do a lot of research before getting one....

I have my chinchilla set up in a large multilevel cage and also have an extra wood area surrounding the cage to keep the mess contained...

Whatever you do don't get a ferret!!! They smell bad!!!!!!

  6. gerbles all the way

  7. chinchillas are just vicious little tw@ts so thats a no go.

Gerbils are quite clean animals, I have two. They only need cleaning out once a week. You just put them in an old fish tank, and use a mesh lid. I made my own for about £3. However, gerbils can be quite unsociable as well.

I would recommend a guinea pig. They are extremely friendly, rarely bite, and are also recommended for children. I've had mine for 5 years now and she's got to be the friendliest pet i've ever had. however, they do tend to stink if you dont clean them out. they dont chew up their cages though, and if you clean out their pee and craps daily, remove uneaten food at the end of each day and completely change their bedding and wash their cage at the end of the day then you shouldnt have a problem with them.

  8. I think gerbils are the best rodent pets. They have no scent, you clean the cage once a month. The really don't have a "sleep time" they just kind of take naps periodacally, so they are very active but not noisey. They need to be in pairs so make sure you get 2. They also love to play and dig. I have mine in a 10 gal tank and give them boxes and paper towel rolls to chew on. They shred it up and make tunnles in them. They are very entertaining to just watch in the tank. They are very friendly and don't bite like hampsters do. The might give a nibble when first getting to know you but they never break skin - that is there way of getting to know you. Good luck with whatever you decide.
