  1. Some of the research shows that when self-management is taught correctly, then students will show an improvement in behavior. However, there are plenty of studies that show little improvement.

In my own experience, just teaching self management does not produce much in the way of positive results. I have had the experience of teaching a skill, with all of the students getting everything right and then having these same students get in a fight just outside of the classroom door.

I think that these skills need to be taught using a role play approach. Studies show that when a motor component is added, there is a greater chance that the child will use the skill later. BUT, in addition, the child needs to be coached in the situations in which he or she will need to use the skills. If not, you are wasting your time!
