The other answerers are incorrect. Munich is nearer to Dresden than Hamburg is (463km opposed to 499km) and according to viamichelin the journey should be about 15 mins quicker!

Munich-Dresden would be the shorter and easier drive...Autobahn all the way and you don´t have to go around Berlin.

Depending on what rout you take, getting to Dresden from the north can take a really long time because there is a ton of construction going on right now. But if you are starting off in Hamburg, stop off in Berlin on your way south to Dresden, it will be more entertaining than looking at the Bavarian countryside for hours if you come from Munich.
