we've gotten a connection from somewhere before only its become weaker and/or gone, so we are looking into purchasing a good router.

our computer (where I'm guessing the router has to go) is in our basement on one side of the house, while the laptop (which is stationed like a computer) and the wii are on the other side of the house on the main floor... I'm guessing its a 40-45 foot separation, along with the basement ceiling and a room or so.

we really just want a solid connection (range-wise), moderately fast internet speed, something that works with the wii if its special for some reason, and something with a lower price but still a great product.

  1. At a 45 ft distance, it really doesn't matter what router you pick as far as range is concerned.  I *personally* would NEVER purchase a router that is not designed well enough to support the dd-wrt firmware from http://www.dd-wrt.com  (Check the hardware compatibility section.)  If a router isn't listed there, it's because the manufacturer cut so many corners in production of the router that it doesn't have enough RAM to run the dd-wrt firmware... That also translates into poor performance running the factory firmware.

The router will go where your DSL or Cable modem comes into the house.  If you've been... ummm... "borrowing"...  a neighbor's internet connection and don't have high-speed internet yourself, a router is not going to get you internet...

  2. any of the wireless g routers should work just fine.  as far as the placement though you should keep it on the same level, if possible, as your wireless devices in your home

  3. Go for Delink

  4. I like Linksys. I've had better results with this brand than D-Link of NetGear.
