Question:

Which rugby position is for me ?

Watching a few videos on youtube and I am now pretty interested in rugby. I play ice hockey currently and have a lean/muscle build. I am about 5'9 and about 165. I am really fast, barely lost to the running back of my HS and he runs a 4.4 40yd dash, i never ran the 40 personally. Any help is appreciated.. I like the idea behind this sport that it takes alot of different types of bodybuilds to succeed.

  1. I suggest winger, you need to be fast and have confidence in your self and be able to dodge easily and sprint like h**l. hope this helps.


  2. Well if you're fast and 'built' I'd recommend either Wing-forward(Flanker to some people) or Centre. Though since you play hockey I'm assuming you like the more physical parts of the game and so would recommend wing-forward.

  3. You're too small to play as a forward but your speed would be wasted there any way.

    Use your pace as a back.

    If you can think fast, pass well in both directions, kick under pressure, understand the game and are confident in your own ability then Scrum Half would be a good place.

    If you can kick superbly, pass well, take a hit, make a hit and call plays then try Fly Half/Stand Off/First Five Eighth (don't let the three different names put you off, just think the man wearing the number ten shirt)

    If you can pass, break tackles, make tackles and have a decent kick then try centre. Inside Centre for big, bruising ball carriers. Outside Centre for smalle, faster runners. Centre is my main position.

    If you can run (as you say you can), , beat your marker and have an eye for the tryline then play winger. You must be able to tackle as well. This is my secondary position.

    Then there's fullback. You must be able to tackle... and i mean you must be perfect. This is the last line of defence and one mistake ALWAYS gets punished. You also have to take opposition kicks under pressure and return them either by running it out or a massive punt up the field. You also need to be able to join the line of attack if you can as well as getting back to defend when you need to.

    I reckon your pace would be best on the wing or at outside centre.

  4. i think your better off joining a local club in the lower divisions having a play around in the half backs and on the wings then see where you feel more comfortable.

    it won`t` take long for you to find whats best for you.

  6. Go for it! its a fantastic game, if your fit, strong and fast its sooo much fun!

    Dont chose a position, all i would say is your not big enough to be a forward. The best way to find a position is go along to the local club and practice! You will find yourself a position thats suited to you once you start practicing/playing

  7. My advice would be to go to your local club and talk to a coach there. Hearing your speed and size is helpful but I'm guessing that as you play ice hockey your kicking skills have never been tested ( I try not to be a bimbo but i don't know).  There are a couple of position that you could try but they depend on your ball skills, speed and kicking ability and you won't know them until you try. So go to your local club, tell them your skills from ice hockey and ask them to give you a try out

  8. wing, centre, 2nd five, fullback. i think you are a bit small for the foward pack, but to utilise your pace, i think wing or centre is good for you.

  9. Distribution skills are more needed at outside centre than wing, and top-end pace is more important on the wing than at centre. Centre is also more of a decision-making position on defence than wing.

    I'd suggest starting on the wing. Less responsibility there for someone starting out in rugby. As you get a feel for the game and your skill-set becomes better you could always move either closer to the forwards ie 13 or 12 (centres) or back to fullback where pace and toughness are definite attributes but you do need to have an understanding of the flow of the game.

    I disagree that a 12 needs to be a big blockbuster. While it's good to have two centres of differing styles (one hard man, one distributor/playmaker), if 13 is the bulky one there is room for a more agile, pacier player at 12. Although he still has to be tough on defence.

    Wing's a good start point I reckon. And like everyone has said, steer well clear of getting put in the forward pack...

  10. the main differences arew that the centre has a lot more physical work to do with running the ball hard, straightening up the backline and getting to wide breakdown where the winger simply needs speed to beat his man on the outside. if you play hockey i would reckomend centre because you are probably used to running into other players at full speed. good luck !!!!

  11. your athletic skills is only a small part of the overall picture of what makes a great rugby player. dont discount other positions just yet. you may find your pace makes you an incredible scrum half, where quick "burst" speed is always an asset.

    if you like to be involved in the action, you wont like wing. unless youre really fast in which case you will get a lot of ball.

    keep your options open.

    but do get in touch with a local club. thats your best first step
