Which sailboats are more likely to get stolen?

  1. Stealing a sailboat is like stealing a cow or horse.  It isn't like you can hoist the sails and get going at a high rate of speed.  If the boat is on a trailer, then all he has to do is hook up and go.  Lock the trailer somehow or make it "not easy" to steal.  Most sailboats at the dock are not locked to the piers of the slip, but the cabins are locked.  Just use your head when it comes to security.


  2. A long range cruising boat is a ticket out.  Can you feature stealing a small day sailor and trying to get away on the ocean?  On the other hand, loading a small boat onto a trailer and heading for boonies (assuming the thief has a trailer or yours is on one) is also feasable.

    Boat theft is not a real common problem in my experience.  Real life shows us that anything of value can be taken from you at any time, but the odds are against losing your boat.
