All salt isn't the same! Check out the wiki entry. Table salt and sea salt are very similar."Rock" salt is just bigger chunks of regular salt-sodium chloride. They would oz for oz melt about the same amount of ice.

Calcium chloride and potassium chloride are both superior ice melters. If you see more expensive ice melters in the market chances are they are salts of calcium or potassium. This has to do with their respective melting points.
