The NBA finals (you all know i can care less about the NBA) are Lakers vs. Celtics and from what I hear, it's getting a lot of hype and supposedly the match-up everyone wants

just like the NHL Stanley Cup Finals are the Wings vs. Penguins... the match-up everyone wanted and supposedly suppost to save the NHL.

So, my question to you is which Finals do you think is bigger and more important to the sport?

I'm also gonna ask this in the basketball section too, to see what responses I get.

  1. Te redwings and Penguins series in so much bigger!!!!

The one game last week were the series interlaped the hockey night dominated in the ratings....

PS way more exciting sport anyways!!!!

  2. I can't stay up late enough to watch either.  Every year these games start later and later.  I say s***w both.

  3. The NBA should be thrilled that it is the Lakers/ Celtics or they would have lost the ratings war this year for the Finals. Those 2 teams will easily crush the ratings of The Cup, but if it werent for those 2 teams.. I am not so sure they would have pulled it out this year. Basketball ratings have steadily declined for a few years, even with ESPN .. while Hockey Ratings have gone up steadily, using VERSUS! Explain that?

  4. Both.If I had to pick one...NBA Finals.

For the Stanley Cup, I love it because of the Red Wings and Pens are in. My fav players going against each other, nothing more exciting than that: Chris Chelios vs. Sidney Crosby. Plus they went into triple OT on Monday,so that was awesome. Kept me up til 11:45pm.Nothing is kooler than that.

As for the NBA Finals, this matchup is more exciting cuz u got the lakers/celtics, which is a dream matchup.not because they both are good, but because they have a rivalry and it dates back to Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. So this is pretty much where Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson meets Kevin Garnett vs. Kobe Bryant, which is pretty huge.

  5. s***w the NBA, it lost its entertainment value when Jordan retired the first time.  Now it's a bunch of thugs running around being grossly overpaid.

  6. I like the fact that the NHL finals have gotten some huge viewership ratings...maybe that will get the NHL back on NBC for good...s***w ESPN for dropping hockey like a hot potato after the lock-out...and Hats off to Versus for picking up so many games during the season.

For that reason alone...high ratings could help the NHL.

As far as NBA...I only watch the playoffs if my team is in it.  I no longer enjoy watching a bunch of millionaires getting paid to do what most will or have played for free in prison after their drug convictions, gang shootings, or whathaveyou.

The good 'ole days for the NBA are gone..1980's and 1990's were their hayday.

  7. Well Laker/Celtics is a classic matchup. That's why I was originally hoping for a Red Wings/Canadians matchup in the SC. It would have had both the Original six classic dynamic AND a US vs Canada dynamic.

The bottom line is the NBA is much more popular than the NHL. I mean, clean cut, drug free athletes, w/ no criminal records - who wants to watch that?? (sarcasm)

  8. This is how much I follow Bball- I didnt even know the Pistons lost to the Celtics.  That is the mushroom I live under- dotn care aboutanythign but hockey, and for some reason Lions football.

  9. As much as I love hockey, it's undoubtedly the NBA Finals.

The league has been suffering over the past five years with declining ratings, and last year's Spurs-Cavs was the lowest-rated finals in history.  To have the two legendary franchises meet in the championship is exactly what the league needs.  It also showcases the Big Three vs. Kobe, so the league will be able to get even more stories and drama from that.

Wings-Pens is good for the NHL, and the ratings seem to reflect that.  But to have two storied franchises like Boston and L.A. just can't be topped.

  10. the nhl, because its going to be a great underdog story when the pens win

  11. I believe the NBA is going to be much more popular and money making than the NHL finals this year. Much more. However the truth is that the NHL finals are more important to their respective sport because it is all of the biggest stars on a high stage, and if it was a stock, it would have a much larger increase in price due to this game and going in to the next season. The NBA has been consistently good and seems to maintain it ok. I really hope the NHL can use some of the NBA's tactics to make the game more attractive to the States.

  12. NHL.  Although I know nothing about basketball...it's the only sport that I don't follow.

  13. Well, the Lakers and Celtics go back in history as huge rivals, and yes I as a casual Celtics fan wanted this match-up.

In hockey, this match-up is not going to save hockey no matter what people say, it's not. I think we all know what would save hockey and it has nothing to do with any of the players.

To me, they're both important. I'd choose hockey over basektball any day, but in the NBA Finals the Celcs are in it, and they're "my team" so it's pretty exciting and I've been watching the games, but I've also been watching hockey all along, even after my team was eliminated.

    I guess it's a draw?

  14. NBA Finals are much bigger in terms of importance and revenue to the sport.  NHL definitely has a solid fan base but it's just not nearly as big as the NBA.  TV ratings of the NBA Finals will completely blow away the Stanley Cup Finals which is all the proof you need.

  15. this is a good question but my answer is i don't care.  the nhl is doing a wonderful job of trying to muster any momentum it had before the lockout.  now with these two series going on the media is trying to manipulate t.v. ratings, viewship, ticket sales, attendance, etc...the nba is not as stable as everyone thinks it is...i personally believe the nba needs the celtics/lakers more than the nhl needs detriot/pitt...the great thing about the nhl is that WORLD CLASS PLAYERS are on every team and a fan can always watch high quality hockey.  i'm not sure the same can be said of the nba...but again, i like the question.
