  1. I'd nominate either Colette Wolff's Art of Manipulating Fabric (excellent book for many, many techniques) or the old series of articles in Threads magazine, issue #79.

    Pretty good online tutorials:

None of the commercial patterns I've made (which are admittedly not a huge number) has had cartridge pleating instructions.  I learned how to do it repairing choir robes.

  2. Are you making clothes or curtains?

For curtains I like Lady Caroline Wrey's book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Caroline-Complet...

For costume making, I like to use gingham as a guide for the rows of stitching, like this: http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk/K...

  3. Singer Sewing Book or Readers Digest Sewing Book have the best instructions for making pleats of any sort.

Also they are very handy books to have in your library for all sewing needs. Quite expensive, but so worth the funding needed. Answer loads of questions about all sewing problems.
