I'm interested in purchasing a shotgun. I currently own a couple pistols (40's and 45's) as well as a nice rifle so firearms aren't new to me. I would like a shotgun; intended for home defense but also something I can take out and shoot whenever i feel like going to a range. I really don't plan on hunting with it... but you never know... i might get a tickle to go out with it. Any suggestions you have a much appreciated. Please, no comments about how firearms kill people or how firearms are needed. Thanks ahead of time.

It's what sits in my closet

  2. A good pump 12ga will serve your needs.  The Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 will fit the bill and price limit.

  3. It all first depends on your preference, semi auto or pump. For me I choose a pump, It is most reliable for home defense weapon. The biggest reason for me is because in the dark you do not know whether or not your semi auto ejected and reloaded the last round or not, whereas with the pump you will know for sure. Also, pumps are more weather resistant. A semi auto may shoot faster, but you may experience a jam. You DO NOT WANT A JAM IN A DEFENSE SITUATION. The best bet is to go with a pump, they are inexpensive, extremely reliable, and faster if you know how to use one. My first option would to be the JIC models by Mossberg. They come in water sealed containers with water resistant finishes, as well as slings, and pistol grips. I have a local shop that sells them for 388, they are EXTREMELY accurate and EXTREMELY reliable. Other than that you can also get a regular Mossberg Defense Model for about 280 or the Maverick Model (which is made by Mossberg) For about 200. Here is a link for them

I own a few mossberg rifles and shotguns, as well as the rest of my family. I am Mossberg for life and I would trust a Mossberg with my life any day. The only other options would be a good Remington, but you will only pay for a name, so you will pay alot higher price for a standard weapon, or even a New England Firearms Defense pump. The NEF though is very cheaply made, around 175. Goodluck, I own the mossberg Defense Mariner with silver reciever and barrel and I can blow holes in 3/4" plywood at 15 feet in a 2 inch group everytime with Winchesters 00 Buck shot 3 inch Mag. Goodluck

I would like to also add, a 12 gauge will be your best bet, DO NOT go with any other shotgun round. 12 gauge is the deadliest and most cheapest on ammo.

  4. Go to your local gunshop & pose the ? to them.  There are many inexpensive shotguns out there.  For home defense I'd look at some type of coach gun- side by side short barrel.  That will give you two shots, if you need more than that, run like the wind.  Second best option, any of the many pump action shotguns on the market.  You should be able to find any of the above for less than $200 used.

  5. Mossberg series 500,(series used by the US Military) under $400.  I would recommend a 20Ga 3" chamber.  I would also recommend shooting sporting clays.  It is a lot of fun and wife/girl friend can join in The 20Ga is good for Dove,Pigeon,Grouse,Quail, and with slugs Turkey. I also have a Winchester 9410, in .410Ga.  Same as the 20Ga just be a little closer when you shoot. I have shot sporting clays with it and done just as good as the 12Ga but shells are a lot cheaper.

The only time I used a 12Ga was in the Military with 00 shot.  It is an effective man killer, but if you are not going to hunt duck or geese, then you don't really need the 12Ga.

  6. A good home shotgun and fun to take out and just blast stuff is a Stoeger Coach Gun, double barrel side by side12 ga.

  7. I have a Remington 870 12 guage that's had a ton of shells run threw it and has not had an ounce of trouble. Just clean it and oil it will last forever. Mine is 20+ years old  and they make a couple versions and can be had for $400 or less.......ujn

  8. this here 20" double barreled coach gun is a LOT of fun to shoot, and has a real menacing look.  Even though the barrels are 20 inches, the gun just looks short and mean.

Great for fun and good for home defense, not so good for duck hunting...

this here is probably the least expensive  home defense/fun shooting shotgun, however, this brand hasn't been around that long, and It's reliability and durability aren't established.

Next up I'd like to highlight Charles Daly, who has a lifetime warranty and will pay the cost of shipping the gun from you to him, and then ship it back for free

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/produ... <--I like the rifle sights

Mossberg makes the model 500 and the improved model 590

Of course, the 500 is just fine and on a budget may be the best choice

the 590 is built a little bit sturdier, but more importantly, it has ghost ring sights on many models

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/produ... <--basic 590 combat, but i'd definately go with ghost rings

the above gun is the 50663, for  a little extra you can get the same gun with a speed-feed stock which is just basically a way to hold 4 more shells and NOT worht the money, plus those shells tend to shake out under hard use.

However, there is also a 51663 that is a little more expensive which has a metal trigger guard and safety, and a heavier walled barrel.  For the hardest use or abuse, including clubbing someone over the head, that is probably the best choice.

  9. I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump..... Its a Persuader / Cruiser model # 50577.... Its got a 20 inch barrel and is fun to shoot... Consider this or a 18 inch barrel model if you are in tighter quarters....

Heres what resides at my house....

    or consider a Mossberg 500 # 50411

This is the only firearm I completely trust my life with....

  10. Currently, the number one selling shotgun in the world is the Remmington Model 870.  It is also one of the most piopular in the world with law enforcement agencies because of its dependability.  Even here in Juneau, Alaska, I can buy one brand new in the box off the dealer's rack for $299.99.  That's a price almost anyone can afford.  Buy it in a twelve guage and you will be ready for just about any kind of bird hunting or defending your home and family from wanna-be jailbirds.  Good luck and good shootin'.

  11. you should check out the stoeger model 2000

  12. I can only speak for myself, but I have a Charles Daly field hunter pump action 20 gauge with a 26 inch barrel that I use for home defense and plinking around. For home defense I use number four shot and for plinking, I like 7 1/2 shot because it has less recoil.

  13. Get a mini gun, or an AK 47, if you want to protect your home get an alarm or a baseball bat!!!

  14. Try a Benelli Nova or Supernova

  15. A mossberg 500A is a good bet with an 18.5" barrel. They go for around the $300 mark depending where you go. I got mine for $289.99. It has only ever jammed whern using the crappy federal shotshells (federal is good centerfire stuff but their shotshells are of crappy quality).

  16. The Remington 870 pump is hard to beat.
