  1. I know they have them in Ohio, so it can be done.  You have to make sure it is deep enough that the fish don't freeze over the winter. (No you don't have to bring them in in winter)  You have to keep the water moving so it doesn't freeze over.  On a limited budget, I wouldn't mess with it.  Check with a local pond supplier and see what they recommend.

  2. If you do decide to go with either choice, from what I understand (don't know for sure), some counties require you to have some sort of fencing around it for safety purposes.  So, you may want to look into that too.

  3. back in my old hometown!!.... ponds are great if you're willing to work a little.... but in your area, you won't be able to ignore one!!..... you'll have raccoons eating your fish, so stay with the carp and goldfish....minnows, in fact..... pond will have to be deeper than three ft to not freeze..... the pump can be set just below the water line for winter so that it just 'boils' the water to keep it from freezing..... then there's the stone  you'll need for around it.... the liner and pump will be the biggest outlays in money..... and if you don't do it RIGHT, you'll be doing it over again later.... your choice..... you can make it easy on yourself if you just get a big water container and put a small fountain in it for the sound of water falling... and that you can take down and put away for winter!!.... and even have a goldfish in it, too!!!.... (got an aquarium?).....

here's a site I love ... lots of help there with new ponds...

  4. I'd save your money.  Both are expensive to create if you want to do a good job and have something nice.  Plus there is tons of maintenance....and remember, you can't leave the fish outside during winter.

  5. how much is your budget for me I'll go for koi.

Just build a high rise liner with wood as foundation

  6. neither, dont do it man!

  7. Hmmm.  Koi - $20 and up each.  Goldfish - 59 cents each.  On a limited budget, it isn't real hard to make that decision.

And you can do it yourself.  It's fun!  You'll have to do it fairly deep so it doesn't freeze in the winter.  You can keep the water moving with a good quality pump that has decent output.

I did it.  And if I can do it, anyone can do it!  Trust me on this!!

  8. My Aunt had a Koi pond. One night it rained and the next day all 12 of her Koi fish were floating at the top dead! It takes a lot of work to maintain one.
