  1. If you are creating a room for pure entertainment purposes, and you have the cash, go with the projector.  Projectors these days are in HD and the size is amazing.  Nothing like watching a football game on an entire wall.

  2. Go with a home theatre since the big screen experience via a projector brings the viewing audience into the movie itself.  Since there so many affordable models,  I would go with a 4X speed DLP projector with at least 2000:1 native contrast; a deinterlacer built-in Faroujda (sp?) processor and a 480i format since 1080i models are just too dark and again, the majority of regular DVDs are set at 480.  The only DLP projectors with such specifications are offered by  Viewsonic and Infocus.  Check out amazon.com for refurbished Infocus SP4805 projectors which are currently selling for around $300!

    Good luck!

  3. If you are able to control the light in the room then go with the projector.  You can't beat the big screen experience.  That being said, it's a real bummer to sit down to watch a football game at noon and having the sunlight wash out the screen.

I'd recommend a 720p projector.  Most people are hard pressed to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p.  720p is also the sweet spot in price\value.  The following are excellent entry level DLP projectors:

    Optoma HD65 - $899

    Mitsubishi HC1500 or HC1600 - $950

If you want to spend more ($2k-3K) then you have tons of excellent options in LCD and DLP (720p and 1080p).  Take a look at these links for extensive reviews of other highly rated projectors:
