im buying a new gun and i wanted the .308 or a .270 but i dnt no what the recoil is for a .308 becuase i have never shot one before in my life but i was wondering for your opinions what a good caliber would be. this will be used on coyotes now till i turn of age to hunt deer elk and so on... im 15 now but already own 3 gun, 10\22, 22\250 12ga semi. i dnt keep pelts so i can rip right through them and be happy. i live on my own land so i dnt worry bout criticization, we have cattle and excess numbers of coyotes so thats my reason for shooting and not keeping pelts.

  1. id get a 270 cause i love that gun for when i varmit hunt

  2. Your better choice is a Remington 6mm.*

  3. They are both excellent choices, I have a 270 and have taken 2 elk and 4 deer with, I should not count the coos deer but I will. A 270 is fast and flat and the recoil is not a problem. A 308 is also a good round, some snipers use them. You already have what you need for small game, birds and varmints.

  4. Get a 280.

The 280 is a little smaller than the 270 and does not kick as much .. and the 280 is a littler smaller than the 308.

  5. The .308 is an awsome efficient round that will actually do a better job at killing than the .270. This is due to the 30 caliber wound that it makes. The .308 will also hit with a heavier bullet than the .270. Police and military marksman use the .308 for its reliable long range performance to kill out to 1000 meters. The difference is they have training in scope adjustments, that help overcome the greater bullet drop.

I prefer the .308 to the .270, but to be fair, the two calibers are not in the same class. Both deliver a bullet that will drive deep enough to kill big game, but the .270 does not always have a heavy enough bullet to kill big game should your shot be less than ideal. The .270 will be able to deliver rounds out to 400 yards with no scope adjustments. This is the beauty of a high spped flat shooter.

For a fair comparison, get a 30-06 and use it for everything in you hunt in North America(with the exception of brown and white bear). I own two 30-06s and they have never been under powered or too slow out to 500 yards. The .270 is a terrific caliber born out of the 30-06. The .270, is a necked down 30-06. The .270 is very popular, and in a hot 130 grain round, It is hard to beat its flat shooting from 400 plus yards. It really shines if you hunt sheep. The problem with the .270 is that it does not offer a great deal more in the way of flat trajectory at 140 grains or more, when compared to a 150 grains + in 30-06. The 30-06 can give you almost identical trajectory, in a 30 caliber wound. The 30-06 can also be a great tach driver with 220 grain rounds; these will serve you best for Moose.

As far as the 300 win mag is concerned, it puts the same rounds out at only 150 to 200 fps faster. This is a lot more kick, for not much more flat trajectory. This comes at a great deal more money for ammo.

I believe that if more power than the 30-06 is needed, buy a 338 win mag. this will give you the same trajectory as the 30-06 but in creating a .338 wound, and with a payload of 200 plus grains. The .338 win mag is about the minimum you would want for a brown bear round.

I also want you to understand if you hunt deer, elk, moose, and the like, it is rare that you will shoot beyond 200 yards; 50 yards being the norm. So dont get hung up on speed, and flat trajectory. Get the 30-06, and you will see the array of bullet options and versitility the gun offers, for all your needs.

    Good luck

  6. for now, since you have it, use the .22-250 or the 12 gage just put #5 pellets in it (basic turkey load) or buckshot if he's close enough. take both gins with you when you go, because a gun sighted in at 100 yards wont help you if he's 25 feet away, which is when you take out the 12 gage and blast him away. when you save up some good money, get a Ruger mark 2 M77 in .either .270 or .270WSM. you can use this for anything from groundhogs up to mule deer and even bighorn sheep. (you can use the 10/22 for encounters within 50 or 75 yards)

  7. since you're gonna hunt coyotes too the .270 would be a great round but the .308 would be extremely good too. the .308 would be better for elk but the .270 would be slightly better for the deer and coyotes in my opinion but its mainly ur choice. the .308 isnt that bad, the recoil is usually overestimated. when i first started shooting .308's i was 13. you should handle the .270 and .308 with ease.

  8. According to Chuck Hawk's recoil index the .308 Winchester produces:  15.8 lbs. of recoil w/150 grain bullets and 17.5 lbs. w/180 grain bullets.

    The .270 Winchester:  16.5 lbs. w/130 grain bullets & 17.0 lbs. w/150 grain bullets.

    Hope that helped.

  9. The recoil is near the same for the 2 choices and not enough of a difference to influence your decision.  The .308 has been used for many years to effectively take Elk.  The nice thing about a .308 for Elk is that you can use 180 grain bullets vs a .270 where you are limited to the lighter loads.  A .308 may drop more at long distances, but it can hit harder when it gets there with premium loads such as the Federal Nosler or MRX loads.  For Coyotes, you can use lighter/faster rounds.  There is a marked increase in both measured and felt recoil with a .30-06 and larger.  For what you will be using your rifle for, a .308 will get the job done.

  10. If you intend to hunt deer and elk then I would say a minimum of .308, .30-06 would be a little better choice, and any of the .300 mags would be MY choice.  As far as shooting coyotes, you've already got the absolute best caliber for that, the .22-250, so I'd focus on other game that you might hunt, i.e. deer, elk, etc.  Good luck with your choice, any of the popular big game calibers do the job just fine, some a little better than others, I believe in using all the power you can take, so my choice would be a .300 Winchester mag or the new Ultra mag, but they might recoil a bit more than what your'e after.
