A friend told me that scratching the top of the CD is worse than scratching the bottom. Is this true?

  1. I think that is a myth because even small scratches on the bottom can cause problems.  The laser reads from the bottom.  Scratches on the top can be bad too, but they would need to be bad enough to remove the reflective layer.

The bottom line is to avoid scratching your CD's and DVD's in the first place.  I have CD's from the 80's that still play perfectly because I take care of them.
