Question:

Which side of my car's windows is tinted?

There is sap on my car window that is not coming off. I am planning on trying Goo Gone to get it off. While it says that it should be safe on the car's exterior, it also warns that it may remove tint from the tinted side of the windows. How do I know which side is tinted? I drive an '05 Jeep Liberty. I didn't apply tint myself; it is whatever comes from the manufacturer. Thanks.

  1. inside

  2. the left side on mine

  3. the tint is on the inside

  4. Goo Gone is great for removing tree sap as is the tar and bug remover they sell at auto parts stores.

Tinting is always done on the inside of the window.   It's a mylar type film that has a bonding/glue agent on one side that is floated onto the window wet and squeegee'd off, then allowed to dry much like a car decal.

To that point only use soft towels like micro fiber towels and good glass cleaner like "Invisible Glass" on your inside windows.     Rain-x anti-fog for inside windows is also a great product that keeps fogged inside windows from tempting you to "wipe them clean" with your hands or any available old paper towel you might have around when/if they fog up.

    Good luck

  5. If its the manufacturers tint, and on a Iiberty, I am talking the anything but the front two door glasses (drivers and passengers front doors) then the tint is actually in the glass itself and is not a film. If it is an aftermarket tint and was done professionally then its a film and is done on the inside of the glass.

  6. Inside.

  7. the tint is usually on the inside of the car.

  8. On practically all cars, the tinting is inside, - but some glass has tinting "in the glass itself"!.  This is especially true of windshield, -- factory glass has the tinting between two plys of glass! All glass with tinting put on after factory delivery is "applied' on the inside surface! Windshield, and rear window is 2-ply safety glass, - most side windows are single-ply glass designed to brake up into about 1/4""blocks" and fall out in accicent to avoid damage to passengers as much as possble, - Windshields splinter but stay "glued" to  the plastic laminated piece in middle -- supposed l to prevent much splinters spraying around, but also slows down "exit from collisions if possible!

Roll window up as tightly as possible, peel weatherstrip back from glass a little bit (at bottom of glass)- and try scratching tint matereial, -- if it scratches with corner of razor blade or tip of  sharp pointed knife-- if it scarateches,- it is very soft!- Also most likely "film" aplied after manufacture! On most "aoolied" tine you will also see a "stopping line" where glass is clear below!

Now  theoretically  sap woud be on the outside, -- and therefore you don't have to worry about it anyway! -- You could also use single edged razor blade and just peel it off glass, -- and a rag with a little gasoline on it should wipe residue left of pretty easily!    For that matter a little cleanser and water (on a rag) used with light prssure will also remove residue after "drips" shaved off!  Of course if you rub hard enough and long enough, it may make s slight haze on glass, but that will take quite a lot of rubbing!  Of course Goop will remove it too , - but costs more!

  9. The tint is always inside, not outside.  If it were outside, a slight brush from a tree limb or bush would render it useless.

  10. factory tint is inside the glass....aftermarket tine inside the car...good luck...i park under a pine tree...i use kerosene.
