I am trying to buy a neoprene padded halter for my 2yr. gelding weighing roughly 950lbs and still under 15h, my choices for the halter I like are cob or full size and I am not sure which to choose. He is wearing a smaller size halter than my mare who is 1244lbs and 15.2, but that halter went by weight size...

  1. cob. my 1000 15.3 horse wears a cob and it fits

  2. Cob. That's what I use on my horse, and he sounds similar to yours.

  3. i dont know

  4. It really depends on the head.  I have seen small horses take large halters and large horses take small ones.

  5. depends on the size of the head. some have big heads for their size and others have small heads. I would say Cob.

  6. I would try the cob, but it might be a little small for him. but normally they have a medium horse size that would be perfect for him. if he is 15hh then try to find a medium horse size because it will fit him a little longer and be more comfortable.

  7. Probably a cob, unless he has an exceptionally large head. You could always return it and get the larger size if it doesn't fit.

  8. You can't really tell by weight alone...I have two 14.1-2 hand mares, about a thousand lbs each, one takes a standard and one takes a cob.

  9. Depends on the size of his head and the width of his muzzle.  You can always punch holes in a too-large halter, but there's no way to make a small one fit.  I would think cob size, but if he's got a big melon, then you might want to go to full.

  10. A two year old will grow, and may have a larger head than his weight at this age suggests.  I'd go larger to be safe....why don't you measure his head?  Then measure the mare and compare.  Measure from the center of the poll down to the corners of the mouth, and measure the circumference of the muzzle on both horses.  Then try his current halter on the mare and see where it seems too small/short, and guesstimate.

  11. weight don't really matter unless its got a heavy head but i would say definitely a cob because a full can be anything from16hh to 18hh then its just shires and other types of heavy horses.

  12. Cob.

I have a 15/15.1 Paint horse, and a Cob is actually a little loose on him.  You didn't mention a breed, so unless he's some sort of growing draft horse with an enormous skull, cob should fit just fine.

  13. cob would be the best for sure

  14. id buy cob unless he has a very large or very small head.

i used a small cob size on my 13.1hh gelding because his head was too large to fit in a pony size!!

but now i have to use a full size on my 15.2hh gelding because his head is massive (hes an IDx)

good luck, im sure if you asked at your tack store they would have it back and exchange it if you asked.

  15. Go buy the one the fits his head and around his nose properly and one that will last awhile. Your horse is only 2 and will grow a lot more I have 5 horses and they all have different size heads. Have fun shopping.

  16. The cob should fit better.
