Hey everyone.

I currently have these skates:

and im on basic 4+5.

i can do backwards crossovers, i just learned sitspins, scratch spin(kind of) and im going to be starting with waltz jump in about 1 month..

Im thinking maybe either this:

http://www.riedellskates.com/ice/280.html

i would buy them from our proshop at a rink(they special order them) but do they come with a blade or do i have to buy one, and if so, which one would match my level? I want to have a nice toepick to make the waltz easier. Or maybe someone reccomends a different brand?

  1. Riedell is a very nice brand. I own them myself, and for you I think the Blue Ribbon would suit you fine if you are just about to learn waltz jumps. But if you plan to keep those skates for a couple of years or so, then the Bronze Medallion 280 is recommended. I have the Bronze Star 320, had them for about a year, and probably keep them for another year. The blade... I'm not sure if it'll come with it, it might though since it's from a pro shop. But I had to pay extra for my blades.

Um I'm a bit confused on your level... how did you learn a sit spin before starting a waltz jump?

  2. I would go with the Medallions or a Jackson Freestyle.

  3. I would suggest the Riedell 280 and a John Wilson or MK balde as suggested on the Riedell site. Always aim for the better skate package, because the support of the boot and blade quality will have a great effect on how fast you learn and how comfortable and safe you are while learning.

The best combination of boot and blade for you and your level of skating is something your should REALLY ask your coach or instructor about. If you are not getting instruction at this time, your skate shop will measure and evaluate your feet and take into consideration your skating level or activities and make a recommendation. Go with the blade that your instructor or skate shop recommends. They are actually there with you in person, can see you skate, can look at your feet and will be in a better position to make a good decision for you.

Eventually, you will experience enough skate fittings, skating lessons and brands of boots and blades to have your own opinions... and you will answer this question for someone else.

  4. The blue ribbons have a plastic sole whereas the medallions have leather.  The blue ribbons will come with a blade, but most pro shops won't move the blade because of that plastic sole - not that you need that but if you did need some adjustment, you wouldn't be able to have it done.  You're right at a level where blue ribbons would work just fine, but it sounds like you want to stay in skating so the medallions would be a good choice.  They have the leather soles.

Ask the pro shop about blades.  I can't remember if you order them separately for medallions.  If you have a coach they will have recommendations for you, too.

  5. If you want to stick with skating, the Bronze Medallion will last you a little longer especially if you want to learn jumps.  Plus, it has a leather sole (Blue Ribbon has PVC) and you can pick whatever blades you want to put with them (Blue Ribbon comes with some basic beginner blades that you'd outgrow quickly).

Good blades for low-intermediate freestyle include Coronation Ace http://www.riedellskates.com/blades/coro... and MK Professional http://www.riedellskates.com/blades/prof...

If you have the option, you might try on some Jacksons just to see if they fit you better than Riedells.  Both are great brands, but one might be better than the other for your feet.

Good luck with your new skates, whichever one you choose:)

  6. k i just finished learning th waltz jump and other stuff and i have the 2 choice ice skate! it is great and it is perfect for jump and sence you are going to learn jumps soon that is the right one! the first option you gave is for beginners that are learning crossovers so you are past that! hape that helps  and good luck! also you buy the boot with blades.

p.s. im curious why you learned the sit spin before the walts jump
