Which skates should I buy?

Hi,

I just started Freestyle1. I am taking one private lesson per week and one group lesson and I practice one other day.

I am wondering which skates should I buy.

My coach suggested Reidell Blue Ribbon.

But on Reidell's website, they recommends them only till Gamma or Delta. I am wondering if Saphire blade that comes with Blue Ribbon is good enough for Freestyle 1 through 3?

I went to a pro shop and they suggested Bronze Medallion boot with MK double star blade. Is this combinition a over kill or way to go?

What would you recommend?

  1. Well since you don't skate very often, I think the skates your coach recommended would be fine.  However, if you are thinking about skating more often, like over the summer, then you should probably ask someone at your pro shop about which skates to buy.  You may even want to get a second opinion.  You don't want to buy a too advanced level of a blade or a too stiff boot because these will only make it harder for you.

  2. I'd probably go with Riedell's recommendation.  You want the boot/blade to last you as long as possible.  The ribbon series is more for very beginner skaters that aren't jumping/spinning.  :)

  3. My daughter skates on a similar schedule (1 private, 1 group, 1-2 open sessions).  She just completed Delta and is starting Freestyle.  Her coach reccommeded the Bronze Medallion boot with either a Wilson Majestic or MK Double Star blade.  She requested that we NOT get the Sapphire blade.  Apparently the blade is formed in a way that makes one foot spins very difficult and not appropriate for this level.

Also, you might consider meeting with an experienced boot fitter.  They have knowledge about many types of skates and could help you find the right combination of boot/blade.  They will also ensure you get the best fit.

    Good Luck!
