  1. The Pentax K1000 is the classic student camera and can be purchased with a lens for under $100.

It's all manual, so you have to learn exposure   (but that's important rather than solely rely on the meter)

  2. If you are talking about film. Any used Canon, Nikon, or Pentax would be fine as long as it is a fully adjustable SLR. You can pick them up for $100-$200 on Craigslist or a good camera store.

For Digital I would go with either the Canon Rebel series or the Nikon D40 or D60. Any one of them would be fine. Go to a good camera store and play around with them. The one you are most comfortable with is the one you should get.

If you are buying both make sure to get the same brand so that the lenses will work with both. If you go with Canon make sure it is an EOS camera. Canon changed their mount in 1987 so any camera after that will be fine. Any camera before that will not accept the same lenses.

Virtually all Nikon lenses from 1959 on will mount to todays cameras. Not all will autofocus and meter properly on the D40 or D60 though.
