I use a combination of things to keep all 7 of my homes PC's running cleanly.  

First, a good antivirus.  I have a corporate antivirus, however before this I used AVG which is free and strong.  http://free.avg.com/

The above mentioned CC Cleaner is great for cleaning clutter out of your computer.  It will free up space and make things run smoother.

I use 2 adware/malware removers because I have always found that there are things one will miss and another picks up.  The best 2 I have found are Adaware and Spybot.

Another program that I like because of the real time defragging is iobit smart defrag.  This is a nice defrag program, and after an initial defrag of your drives it will continue to actively prevent defragmentation.

I just got the latest BETA of Advanced Windows Care, it's great.

It has a lot of applications and is user friendly.
