  1. Pretty much any soil that wheat would do well in would be fine for rice. It needs somewhat more moisture than wheat, though, and a bit more room. In places around the world where rice is a major crop, it does well in the wet environments as it has a great tolerance for flooding and submerging, but most people wrongly think this is an absolute must when it is just a thing that works by taking advantage of the fact that rice is tolerant of being wet (and weeds are not in general). Given an area that is warm and has wet rainy seasons and warm dry seasons it works out well. The rice can be planted in the rain swollen river lowlands (few other crops will live in that environment) that are converted to paddys and all the runoff and layers of soil/ silt/ mud and mixed organic material gives a great deal of nutrients annually as well as weed control. Any water weeds then disappear as the paddys dry or are drained, unless the farmer is taking advantage of fish farming in his paddy system. Fish and rice= you will live forever! If your soil is somewhat decent, not too sandy as you want to be able to keep it moist and not rely too heavy on fertilizer, then you can grow rice. Just needs moisture and a bit more room as I said earlier. The wikipedia links below are good if you have not see them. For an experiment, throw a few assorted grains of brown whole rice from the health food store in some containers to play around with. I did that one year with about a half dozen assorted grains. Gives a great idea and comparison and it isn't too too late in the season to play around with them.

  2. A good rich loam soil is usually the best soil for growing almost any crop, especially intensive farming.  For rice the most important thing is finding flat land or land that can be made flat by contouring it.  It is also necessary to have a subsoil that will hold a flood for rice farming.

  3. for rice you need red soil that is moist and rich with mineral and nutrients. For intensive farming red and black soil that has pete in it is ideal

  4. Clayey loam
