  1. There is a website which gives details of eclipses from any location at http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/JSEX/JSEX-N...

For Cleveland, it shows the following:

24th December 1973. Partial eclipse from sunrise (07:58) until 09:57 with 28% of the Sun's diameter covered at maximum.

13th December 1974. Partial eclipse from 09:12 to 12:06 with 58% of the Sun's diameter covered at maximum.

12th October 1977. Partial eclipse from 15:30 to 16:50 with 17% of the Sun's diameter covered at maximum.

26th February 1979. Partial eclipse from 10:38 to 13:14 with 75% of the Sun's diameter covered at maximum.

The only one of these happening only in the afternoon was the 1977 eclipse, which was a relatively small partial eclipse, so maybe that was the one you saw.

  2. There were two eclipses between those years which would have been viewable from Cleveland, one in December 1974 and one in February 1979.

The one in '74 was a partial solar eclipse, and would not have passed directly overhead Cleveland, it is likely that from there only a small part of the sun would have been covered, perhaps not even enough to notice.

The one in '79 was a total solar eclipse, and again it did not pass directly overhead Cleveland, so only part of the sun would have been covered up, but it would have been a greater part.

Also, there was a total solar eclipse in March 1970 that passed quite close by, in Cleveland a large proportion of the sun would be covered up, that would be very noticeable. Here is the route for that:

And here is the December '74:

    And the February '79:

Here is NASAs eclipse page, you can view details on all eclipses with in the 100 year range 1951 - 2050:
