  1. Neither is a sound per se. THX is a set of standards that theatres or various types of hardware must meet to be certified. These standards include specifications for where speakers should be located, reverberation time, screen placement, acoustic isolation, a baffle wall, etc.

IMAX is a large format film presented with digital surround (which because of screen and overall theatre design does not meet THX standards, but presents an alternative).

Certification of an auditorium entails specific acoustic and other technical requirements; architectural requirements include a floating floor, baffled and acoustically treated walls, no parallel walls (to reduce standing waves), a perforated screen (to allow center  This is word for word (courtsey of Yahoo Wickpedia) on the purpose of THX, I have a receiver that carries the THX Logo and the sound is off the charts on the other hand IMAX or Image Maximum specialized mostly in Digital 3D imaging bringing your film to life [by using special effect cameras and 360degree screen[s] along with these multi-lens cameras; as if you were actually part of the picture its self.  So there you have it there is no comparison, just a different two worlds.
