Football (chinese) is more popular around the world due to its simplicity and its play anywhere style but football (american) is more popular in america both are great sports but personally i prefer the american kind and i'm irish its just more exciting and interesting don't get me wrong i love ''soccer'' as well it just gets boring watching men run around a pitch and kick a ball over and over with maybe one or two scores.

why the h**l is everyone making the point of saying "in America its Football and the rest of the world its soccer" the question clearly states "Which sport is more popular" not which sport is more popular in certain countries, so in answer to the ACTUAL question, FOOTBALL is played and watched by more people around the world so therefore it is more popular than American Football, end of!

I think what a lot of people get confused by is the Super Bowl is the most watched annual sporting event but the World Cup is not classed as annual because it is held every 4 years!

Soccer is more popular, being it is played throughout many countries. American football is their version of soccer.  We dont see foreigners coming into football as we do with baseball, hockey and so forth, being America is one of very few that play this version of the sport. Soccer games get crowds into the high tens of thousands, compared to our 30- 40,000ish.  IN America football is more popular than compared to soccer, but as a whole, soccer is highly regarded as a major sport.
