  1. Part of it is in Maryland and part of it is Virginia. Its not a state. My question is which of these 2 states claim the Potomac River?

  2. It is not in a state.  It is a Federal territory just like Puerto Rico.

  3. washington D.C isn't in a state, its between virgina and maryland. you know the district of colombia

  4. district of columbia

  5. None.

Washington DC is in the District of Columbia (the DC in Washington DC).   This is a federal capital territory in its own right.

  6. Washington D.C. is a territory in the United States unclaimed by any state.

It is often associated as being a city in the state of Maryland but those assumptions are incorrect. If you were to mail a letter to/from Washington D.C., the address would be as followed:

    John Smith

    1234 Water Street,

    Washington D.C., US (zip)

  7. Washington DC is in the District of Columbia, which is not really a state.  It was carved out of Maryland and Virginia back in the very early days of the US, since the founding fathers felt the need for the central government not to be subject to any one state.  Since then the part that was Virginia was ceded back to Virginia.

  8. Michael, rob and Ashley on the right track

  9. It's not in a state. It sits on land that was formerly parts of Maryland and Virginia but it was intended not to be in any particular state. That's so that all states can be seen as equals in that they don't have the national capital in them.

  10. it is in no state. The District of Columbia is a federal district with its own government.

it is bordered by Maryland and Virginia.

  12. It's in a state of utter chaos and depravity most of the time.

  13. Washington DC is in Washington State

  14. It's not a state, it's a district.  It is surrounded by Maryland and Virginia.  I work there, although I live in MD.  Hope this helped.
