  1. Kentucky is sort of the center of breeding... the major horse farms are all there.  New York is big for racing, but the NYRA is going bankrupt and Aqueduct was supposed to stop racing.  California is a big horse racing state and so is Florida.  There's a lot of tracks in Kentucky... Churchill and Keeneland are big of course.  It's hard to say where racing is "most popular."

  2. Thoroughbred racing is popular all over but obviously Kentucky is the biggest. Being from Arizona i haven't seen a whole lot about it but Phoenix does have a racetrack and desert all around it. It's also very popular in California and Florida as well.

  3. In order of Popularity

    KY (Churchill et al)

    NY (Saratoga and Belmont)

CA (Hollywood Park Santa Anita, etc.)

    MD (Pimlico)

    FL (Gulfstream)

    ARK (Oaklawn)

  4. Kentucky has always been known for horse racing.

Horse racing in Kentucky dates back way back into the 1780's. So... that is a LONG time!

And no Kentucky does not have a desert.

Why would it have a desert for horse racing?

  5. I would have to say that racing is most popular in California.  They have the southern California circuit and the northern California/State Fair circuit.

The money wagered at the SoCal tracks is the largest in the country, that's why the Breeders' Cup is going there this year AND going back there again in 2009 (this despite a many problems with the new synthetic racing surface at Santa Anita).

And, for the second part of your question, California does indeed have a desert.

I would have like to have said Kentucky too, but for instance there's no big racing there right now, whereas CA races all year round for the most part, and if pick6 pools are indicators of how big the handles are, much more money is bet in SoCal.
