They say that Melbourne is the sports capital of Australia. I dispute that claim and say that Victoria is falling well behind other states.

Queensland has produced a team which recently won three premierships in a row at AFL. They also provide rugby league & rugby union teams that excel (look at State of origin matches). Qld always produces the bulk of our country's top swimmers and athletes.

Melbourne has to import all their rugby, soccer and basketball players. They are now doing the same in AFL. Their under 18's performed dismally last year and apart from Geelong (made up of imports) look how other melbourne based clubs are going. Awful.

So, I say Qld is the most productive state in Aust when it comes to producing sportspeople. Victoria is falling down the list.

  1. victoria we evented the thing

  2. I agree that Vic is not the sporting capital of Australia. Austrlaia is the sports country of the world. I believe that SA, NSW and QLD all produce a higher number and quality of athletes.

  3. Im not sure bout other sports but i believe SA would be very close, i have been searchin for SA afl players and their is quite a few players

  4. well.....this may seem bias but I do agree as a Queenslander and say that Queensland is producing the modern day sporting heros.

its like.....6 or 7 out of every 10 sports stars mentioned on TV are queenslanders (as a random guess).

While we have legends from nearly every stae...to me, it seems that Queensland is the sporting breading grounds for world champions...look at the Olympic Swim Trials lol....some of the finals had 6 or 7 QLD's (out of 8 lanes!!!)

  5. NSW produces more than victoria as well

  6. Victoria

  7. Victoria

the sporting capital of the world

  8. there isno real way to judge if u specify the sport for example aussie rules victoria (not strictly melbourne) or rugby league is new south wales it all depends on how u wish to look at it, we should really stop pitting state vs state and work on the fact we have some of the best athletes on the planet regardless of which state they came from or now live in

  9. Yes, I agree. Qld for sure.

Poor old Victoria. They are falling by the wayside & being passed by all & sundry. One only has to read the comments in this section by Vics to see that.

They are all abandoning their team of choice in droves - & jumping on the bandwagon of Geelong. That club has more Vic supporters today than it has ever had.

  10. Melbourne may not produce all our sporting talent but it has been voted the Sporting Capital of the world :))

Have to agree, Qld probably does produce the most sports people - but that doesnt change the fact the Melbourne is #1 in sports events.
