  1. Well when they form an ionic compound they form BaO which is essentially barium oxide. Now since that barium is +2 due to its valency as its in group 2. So when it forms an ionic compound its valency becomes 0 essentially. So to go from +2 ot 0 it has to gain. so it essentially has to give two electrons away to oxygen so that it can have a full outer shell and that oxygen can have a full outer shell resulting in a nice balanced ionic compound. At the end both elements are happy ie they form BaO ie barium oxide.
