Question:

Which states have can redemption centers?

We save our cans/bottles, and were wondering which states have can redemption/recycling centers? We would like to get the $.05 per piece, but if there isn't a state close by, we'll just crush them and take them to get $.25 per pound.

Thanks for any help.

  1. I'm from MA and I know all the New England states except New Hampshire have redemption centers. But you can't get the 5 cents unless a deposit was made when you bought it. In other words I can't buy soda in Arkansas and return the can for the 5 cents in Massachusetts. There's something in the bar code to prevent that from happening. Other wise some where there will be a cash shortage on returns.

  2. According to 2004 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, approximately 30% of the U.S. population currently reside in states or territories with existing container deposit laws:

California (5 cents; 10 cents for bottles 24 fl oz or greater), implemented in 1987 and increased 25% in 2007; listed on containers as "Cash Return Value" or "CRV"; legislation pending that would expand program to include all plastic bottles (shampoo, food, etc)[4]

    Connecticut (5 cents), 1980

    Delaware (5 cents), 1982

    Hawaii (5 cents), 2005

Iowa (5 cents for containers that held carbonated beverages), 1979 (also applies to wine bottles)

Maine (5 cents, also applied to fruit juice and bottled water; 15 cents for some wine bottles), 1978

    Massachusetts (5 cents), 1983

Michigan (10 cents), 1978 (beer bottles were 5 cents until the 1980s)

    New York (5 cents), 1982

    Oregon (5 cents), 1972

Vermont (5 cents; 15 cents for most liquor bottles as of 1990), 1973

  3. Michigan has this - but I think for any state that does the redemption, the cans need to be specially marked with the refund state and amount.  This stamping or printing indicates the deposit was paid on the can or bottle, and that it is eligible for the refund.  I don't believe items without this marking can be redeemed.

  4. i know oregon does at pretty much every super market.  you just take the cans in and feed them into the machines yourself and get $.05/can.  i'm in las vegas now and i think they do it differently here..i'm not sure how?  and in california, you take it to a plant where they pay you by the pound.
