Recently moved to Houston... have always shopped at Kroger out of habit. I've been hearing about H.E.B., and I'm wondering if they have lower prices? Should I make a switch? Any opinions from people who have shopped at both?

  1. Easy.....HEB is WAYYY cheaper than Kroger. I live in Austin, Tx.

As a matter of fact, here's an example...tonight 2 liter bottles of sodas were 4 for $5.00. Even Walmart couldn't beat that.

  2. I'd stay with Kroger if they have em in Houston.

HEB sounds like an upscale store like Harris Teeter.

  3. Hi,

I previously lived in the Woodlands (suburb north of H-town) for 5 years, and my folks currently live in Kemah (south of Houston). I personally love HEB- the produce is outstanding and the prices are comparable to Kroger. My Mom shops at Kroger, where there is a Starbucks inside the store. The only difference I see is that Kroger has a frequent shopper discount (if you apply for it). HEB didn't have that when I was living in the US. HEB also owns the Central Market chain (located in Highland Village, east of I-45 on Kirby? if I remember correctly?)  which is high-end grocery shopping, a great place to buy specialty goods, but lousy for stuff like canned soda and paper towels. Kroger has some "Signature" stores that are a little on the higher-end, but they still sell the staples. Try out the two stores closest to your new home, and you'll get a feeling for which carries the brands you prefer and which feels more like grocery-store 'home' to you!

I hope you enjoy living in Houston!
