Geography often plays a huge role in affecting developments in civilizations in human civilization. In this particular case, it is interesting to note how the strait has affected the naval balance of power in the area: ships all have to pass through this little bottleneck, and nations would try to fortify the only bit of land there (the island of Gibralter) and use it to stop the movement of fleets.
