It was James VI and I (He was James VI of Scotland and James I of England). Due to quirks after the present queen came to the throne, if we have another King named James he'll be James VIII.

Trick Question:  James I of England, who was also James VI of Scotland, united England, Scotland, and Wales into a United Kingdom under his personal rule between 1603 and 1625.   Scholars translated and compiled an English version of the Bible under King James' authority, and English settlers first colonized both Virginia (Jamestown) and Massachusetts (the Plymouth Colony) during his reign.   He is also responsible for colonizing Northern Ireland with Church of Scotland settlers.
