  1. Whats "not too far"?  Inner-ring suburbs with good schools would include Blue Ash, Montgomery, Wyoming, Indian Hill (if you're a millionaire), Madeira, and Glendale.  Those would all be 20 minutes or less to downtown.  There are other decent inner-ring towns, but many of them go to Cincinnati public- which is a mediocre school district at very, very best- you would likely end up having to send your kids to private school.

Outer ring suburbs (less urban) include Symmes Township, Liberty Township, West Chester, Mason, Deerfield Township, Anderson Township, Milford, and Loveland.  Those are all between 25 and 35 minutes to downtown, depending on how far you are from the highway.  I personally recommend Liberty Township, West Chester, Mason, or Deerfield Township myself- they are really nice, upper middle class, very family oriented suburbs with great schools.

There are also some places like Villa Hills in Kentucky, which are close to downtown, and which some people claim cost less than Cincinnati, and they probably do cost a bit less.  However, I am less sure about their school systems down there, given that Kentucky perennially rates as a state as having one of the worst statewide set of schools in the country.
