  1. I'd go with Velodyne SPL-1000R.

  2. If you have time and a little wood working skills and some tools, I would suggest building your own. I am in the process of building  my own from partsexpress.com. They have complete kits to satisfy your needs. Alot of bang for your buck. You might end up spending close to 50% less on a kit and get better results (sound and feel) that some of the name brand ones. The savings can be used to by some Aura Butt Shakers also found at partsexpress. You can attach a couple of these babies to your couch or recliner and get low frequency shake and rumble effect, it will put you right in the action.

  3. Both are good choices.

I would go with the Velodyne first as they have more of a "name" in the subwoofer world.

If it was me, I would also check out "SVS Woofers" or "HSU Research". Both of these companies have a great reputation and do internet only sales so you are getting great value for your money.

I own the SVS Cylinder series and it gives deep, smooth bass.  (The website has waterfall charts).  The owners of SVS used to help people design and build subs and they have said good things about HSU.

(Thats why I bought SVS - they dont slam the competition and are honest about both their products and others.)

  4. I am far from an expert in these matters. However, six months ago I, too, was looking for a sub woofer. I researched and researched and finally arrived at the same two names as your other answerer.

I finally chose SVS and the bass is excellent. I have a large room with high ceilings and the SVS "covers it" with ease. It's not a bargain brand but you listen to what you pay for and it'll last a long, long time.
