  1. Buy a cheap long board or soft top surfboard. Morey makes a cheap soft top and you can buy a cheap long board of craigslist.

  2. Go to a good Ocean City surf shop and talk to the folks there who know the wave conditions lots better than we do. And while you are at it, think about some lessons (http://hbsnakesurf.com/). Also, don't rush into buying anything until you have had a chance to try a couple different types of boards (rent them or borrow them from your friends who surf). Do waste you money with anything on line, and stay away from Chinese made popouts. remember, TRY before your BUY. Don't decide one type of board looks cool, but you can't ride it after you have paid a lot of money for it. Go to a good local shop, where they will help you get the right board for your size (weight/bouyancy ratio), skill level (beginner) and local wave conditions.

Check some of the resolved questions in Yahoo Answers _ "Surfing" and you'll see what I mean. I have been surfing since 1966, and I take my questions to the experts, at a good local surf shop.

  3. well if its your first board i would suggest going with a used board. if you learn fast and are looking for something a little harder than longboarding, i would say to go with a mini-mal. they turn better than longboards. but go to a surf shop and have the guys that work there size you up with a board that is boyant enough and long enough. and wide enough. but if you really want to get into something hard, get a used, long, shortboard. its not the beest idea to do that if your a begginer and you will prob get frustrated with it and it takes a lot more effort to paddle and catch waves. but yeah i say get a used mini-mal and have fun out there!
