Question:

Which swimming costume is best for cometitions and galas?

I'm confused (quite easy to do). My daughter (10) competes for the club, she was told to buy a lycra costume 2 sizes too small. She has been wearing an endurance speedo, which apparently is wrong for racing because of the drag. However, the lycra one that I have bought has got a polyester lining - it fits very tightly and I can see it's more like a 2nd skin, but surely with the lining this would create drag? Can any competitive swimmers/coaches help me out with this one?

Thank you

  1. The biggest key is to make sure that the suit fits very tight, not so much the material. Some coaches recommend Lycra for racing, but the polyester suits resist the water more than the Lycra so this helps reduce the drag. My racing suit is 100% polyester. As far as suits for practice you can really wear whatever you want. It is often times better to buy them a little larger for practice because they fit more comfortably, and they can help create some drag so that you work harder in practice so when you do swim with your smaller suit in a race that you can work just as hard as you do in practice, but get further.

  2. speedo do a good range

they do an aquablade which is the cheapest

then a fastskin which costs around £40 maybe slightly more or less

fastskin II which cost around £70

and faskskin pros which cost about £90

i currently race in a faskin and compared to other brands i have tried i think that it is the best

  3. i suggest u 2 try out juliet or jockey..it is very good.i use it maself as i m a proffessional swimmer....

  4. I use Dolphin suits u can find them at http://www.swimmerschoice.com/php/showPr...  Sizing is a bit different my daughter races in a 26 and practices in a 28(still tight) or 30. My daughter is 75 pounds, 4.7 inches tall, and a very muscular build. Good Luck as this would be my number 1. suit!

  5. i used to always wear speedo, lycra (the shiny ones, cant remember the name though)

  6. The lycra suit is supposed to be very tight.  It is very common for novices of the sport to buy suits that are way too big.  Anybody under 100 lbs should be in a 24, this is equivalent to a women's size 0 pant.  A 26=2, 28=4, 30=6, 32=8, 34=10.  These sizes are super generous.  Some suit brands don't even make above a size 36 (dolphin uglies), 38, 40 are plus size.

The average 10 yr old wears a 24.  The average highschool girl wears 26-28.  Girls weighing 150 lbs should be in a 28.
