For example, which brands are preferred over the others? College Board, Kaplan, Princeton Review, etc, and why?

I have a 2007 SAT/ACT/PSAT prep software from Kaplan, and I was wondering if it's still good for this year.

  1. It depends. The books are written for different audiences. I tried Princeton Review  2008 SAT book and never used it because every time I tried to read the actual review sections it felt like I was relearning everything from 8th grade. Barron's books are generally considered a lot harder, so if you're a really strong tester, try those.

  2. Yes, your 2007 book is still good for this year.  (Anything after 2005 is still good for this year.)

My favorite review book for the SAT Reasoning Test (SAT I) is the College Board's The Official Guide to the SAT.  That's because it's the only truly realistic test practice out there for the SAT, and when it comes to the SAT, practice is key.  I also like the Princeton Review book a lot, but it takes a backseat to the College Board one.  However, they work well together because the College Board book is very content-oriented, while the Princeton Review book is very strategy-oriented.

For the Subject Tests (formerly SAT II), I like the Princeton Review books a lot.  They tend to cover just the right amount of material to do well on the Subject Tests.  For every subject test that I used a Princeton Review book, I got an 800.
