  1. You can use two methods.

    First, it is the limewater test.

    Second, you can test by using fire.

    1st method: If the limewater turn chalky or cloundy, the gas is carbon dioxide. If not, it is other gas.

    2nd method: Start a fire and pour some of the gas. If the fire burn out, the gas is carbon dioxide.

    Carbon dioxide can turn limewater chalky and put out fire.

  2. Bubbling the gas into limewater is the classic test for CO2.

    Limewater is a saturated solution of Ca(OH)2.  When CO2 is dissolved it reacts to produce insoluble CaCO3 and the solution turns cloudy.

    Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(aq) --> CaCO3(s) + H2O(l)

  3. The test for carbon dioxide is that it turns limewater cloudy/milky.

    An Experiment: Get a glass and fill it with limewater then use a straw and blow into it. It shows that there is carbon dioxide in your breath as you breathe out. The limewater will turn cloudy after a couple of minutes.

    Hope this helps.
