  1. Chlorophyll looks green because it absorbs red and blue light, making these colors unavailable to be seen by our eyes. It is the green light which is NOT absorbed that finally reaches our eyes, making chlorophyll appear green. However, it is the energy from the red and blue light that are absorbed that is, thereby, able to be used to do photosynthesis. The green light we can see is not/cannot be absorbed by the plant, and thus cannot be used to do photosynthesis.

  2. Growlights use mainly HPS light bulbs and emit nearly monochromatic light in the 590 nm wavelength.

However, plants use most of the visible spectrum in the natural world.

And some p[lants. such as mushrooms, do not need any visible light.

  3. The blue wavelength is what chloroplasts use to convert light to an energy source. This is why plants do not grow well as water depth increases.

  4. Check out the link below.  It is call PAR, short for photosytheically active radiation.  It is between 400 and 700 nm wavelength (blue to red) with a dip by the green wavelength.

  5. The white light spectrum of the sun is what a plant needs, with areas around the UV and IR to be needed the most, and green to be needed the least. On a graph it appears to be like a two hump camel back. The frequencies between are needed but the chlorophyll types (called A and B) respond each mainly to a narrow frequency at the ends of the frequencies of light visible to us.

  6. Sunlight is rather yellowish. At sea level, quite a bit of UV is also cut off.

The light from daylight type fluorescent lamp is found suitable. However, such lighting for plant growth is not possible for large scale agriculture. Best for potted plants, bonsai, and small green houses for growing tropical plants in cold countries.

  7. Every frequency other than green light.

Otherwise plants would not be green.

  8. red and blue light

  9. visible light esp red and blue.
