Question:

Which to write - England or Great Britain?

I'm having to send some documents to my fiance in England. I hear there are differences between what USPS and Royal Mail want to see within an address. I've heard that USPS requires the country to be written as GREAT BRITAIN, in caps; yet, I've heard that Royal Mail prefers the specific country within Great Britain (England, Wales or Scotland) to be written at the bottom. And then, I've also heard it's okay to write UNITED KINGDOM in all caps, as well. Which is correct, so that I don't have to worry about these documents, which are time sensitive and quite important, being returned?

  1. Postal address is UK.  Honest!

  2. When I was involved with snail mail I used to just use England. I would advise against using Initials such as UK as this is a very short form of the whole name.

  3. If you are writing to England, then England is fine.

  4. I always send my mail home from the USA addressed to ENGLAND - never had a problem...

  5. write:

    (address)

    England

    United Kindom

    (zipcode)

That is what happens to my mail

  6. The correct country name is UNITED KINGDOM.

There is no need to write the name of the nation in the address (e.g. ENGLAND).

However, your MUST include the UK POST CODE for the address, otherwise you risk the delivery being late.

Optionally, you can include the county (e.g. Warwickshire) although it is not necessary.

  7. Write:

    England

    United Kingdom

    and it should arrive!

  8. safe bet would be

    ENGLAND ,UK

  9. You could put either England or Great Britain, although I would recommend following the Royal Mail's guidelines.

Sounds like you've already done the research, but just in case, you can check format here (scroll down to Great Britain):

  10. Always put in the country be it Northern Ireland , England , Scotland or Wales followed by UK ( not really necessary ) but should include the Post Code - called " Zip Code " acroos the Pond .

  11. Postie Here - Any of those is OK as when it gets into Royal Mails system the machines and postal workers read the postcode more often than the town or country.  I would recommend writing the postcode larger than the rest and you will have no problems.

    Definition for the Countries.

United Kingdom = All the islands, Northern Ireland and the mainland.  Does not include Isle of Man and Channel Islands in some defintions

British Isles = All above with the addition of Eire (although this is argued against by some if not all Irish)

Great Britain = The Mainland (includes England, Wales and Scotland)
