  1. there aren't any other cities or towns in the south end. it's just part of boston. as is dorchester, charlestown, roslindale, south boston etc.

  2. the South End is a very urban neighborhood that touches downtown and the rough neighborhood of Roxbury located within Boston, MA and is one of the 16 neighborhoods.

  3. I mostly agree with Tom except that no way is Boylston st the border. I'd say the MASSPIKE would be the northern border to Huntington, then the rest I agree with.

  4. The South End is  a few pricey, mostly g*y neighborhoods in Boston between Chinatown, Boylston Street, and the Mass Pike

  5. The south end is the section of Boston just south of backbay, west of downtown, that contains many brownstones and tree lined streets (and no T stops!!)

Since its still part of Boston proper I guess it would be easiest to explain the south end with some arbitrary and approximate borders.

I would put Boylston street as the northern border, Huntington Ave starting at Copley square as the western border,

Mass ave as the southern border, and I-93 as its eastern border.

The South End isn't to be confused with the terms south boston, southie, or the south shore, all which are different areas entirely.
