I use Oanda.com for Forex and Scottrade for equites.

Oanda will let you start with as little as $200 and Scottrade with as little as $500.

Visit the CFTC (Commodites, Futures, and Trading Commission) website and ensure that whatever online broker you use they are reputable and fully licensed.

i started with zecco.....still use it, still very happy. only ones with no fee for stock trades, and no minumums.  it took me some time to see that most of my gains were lost to the fees i paid to actually buy stock and sell it....all the others will charge you fees for trading, but compare and see for yourself!

You should check out Firstrade ( http://www.firstrade.com/ ).  They are FINRA approved and SIPC insured.  There are no minimums to start trading.  Plus, Firstrade puts security first.  They offer a special browser SafeCentral so you can trade without worrying about keyloggers.  They also offer free complimentary antivirus software TrendMicro.  You should definitely check them out.
