  1. Not sure I only use short haul trains occasionally. By the looks of Virgin Trains they look pretty luxury. On-broad shop. Newspapers, Sweets, drinks.

  2. The Virgin Pendolino was a very nice train. My problem was that I had no place to sit down.

  3. I personally love travelling on Pendolinos, but it's mainly because i've only been First Class. Standard could be totally different. Very wide seats which recline, audio system, air con, and more importantly brilliant complimentary catering.

I personally really enjoyed a trip on 3-car ex-MML 170505 around a year or two ago between Manchester Picc and Liverpool L St, and found it very confortable in the small section of seating immediately behind the leading driving cab.

I couldn't hear any engine noise what so ever.

The return CT 2-car 170101 was totally different, engine noise wise, as it was very noisy (sometimes excessively). The seat wasn't as good as the first 170 either.

The short Salford to Manchester trip which i've had before 185's were out, were very confortable when the 175's were running around. They are a definate contendar for the best train, although Voyagers and Pendolinos are what I would personally vote for.

If you want to know my personal worse train.. class 143's are very bad, along with 142's, although i've not been on a 144.

  4. Electrostar 377 / 375 / 365's are the best commuters in the London Area.

Virgin 1st Class is the best for distance travel.

    Worst...

319 FCC stock for Commuter Traffic

Pendolino stock for cross country traffic.

  5. I once travelled from Darlington to Glasgow, changing to a Scotrail Torbostar (?) at Waverley. The later was much more comfortable than the GNER electric I had travelled there on. In fact, I find that with long legs and back problems those can be very uncomfortable. Virgin Voyagers (and their cousins, the Hull Pioneers) are great (although, my wife, travelling for the first time last Monday on a former had some difficulty in intially finding out how to get in and out of the loos!). I've not had the pleasure of using a Pendolino yet, living as I do on the ECML route.

  6. Loco Hauled Mk2/Mk3 coaches. Southern 377's aren't bad either.

  7. Virgin Trains, wish there were more of them especially in Wales
